Diversity is important

Diversity and gender equality is very important to us. It is an explicit goal of the Appl-FM project to support efforts that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. We strive to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone in our research team regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, family situation, and age. And we actively seek to recruit individuals from underrepresented groups especially women to join our team.

Diversity is necessary

Research consistently shows that a diverse team performs better – our experience confirms this phenomenon as well. A diverse team naturally bring in different opinions and ideas, which leads to more creativity, more innovation, and better problem solving. For our interdisciplinary research, innovative solutions are absolutely necessary for adequately addressing the highly complex and varied challenges inherent in our research problems.

Diversity requires active support

We recognize that diversity and gender balance can be achieved only by actively implementing concrete measures. As mentioned above, we make the effort to attract female applicants for every role we hire, be it a student worker, PhD student, or post doc.
Besides ensuring that our team is diverse, we must also ensure that the science that we conduct also promotes diversity. Specifically, we take gender, sex, and other properties of diversity into account when we employ machine learning in our research to strive for fairness and equity in the models.
