Alexander Löser has been Professor of Data Science at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (BHT) since 2013. Prior to this appointment, he held research positions at the IBM Almaden Research Center, HP Labs Bristol, and SAP Research.
His research focuses on deep learning, language models, and explainable AI, and he has co-authored more than 100 publications in leading peer-reviewed AI venues.
In 2013, he founded the DATEXIS research group and the Data Science+X Research Center at the BHT. He co-founded the MSc in Data Science study program in 2017 and joined the DFG-funded Berlin Initiative for Research on Foundation Models in 2023. Since 2019, he has played an instrumental role in establishing doctoral degree–granting rights for Berlin’s universities of applied sciences.
At the national level, he combines academic leadership in deep learning and foundation models with sustained engagement in AI policy. These engagements include his membership in Learning Systems, Germany’s preeminent AI platform, as well as principal investigator roles in SOOFI, Germany’s flagship initiative for large sovereign open-source foundation models.
Since 2012, he has advised DAX- and NASDAQ-listed companies and co-designed more than 60 enterprise-grade data products and platforms.
