After obtaining her BA and MSc degrees in the USA, Amy Siu moved to Germany and obtained her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in 2017 and became a professor of Software Development at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (BHT) in 2018.
Although her teaching focuses on programming at both the beginner and advanced levels, Amy’s research has always focused on Natural Language Processing. She is particularly enthusiastic about text mining, knowledge harvesting, machine translation, and language models (large and small) and their applications for specific domains such as the biomedical domain. Since texts in such a domain feature highly divergent vocabulary, writing style, and other linguistic characteristics, she works on data-driven methodologies that are not only specific to the domain but also to the task. While her expertise is primarily built upon working with English texts, she also has experience working with German and Chinese texts.
